Local Search Engines Ranking Factors


SEO have already gone local because search engine focusing more on local search results. Google already have introduced Google Maps and Local Business Center.  Also later added local search results to Universal Search displaying them on top of everything. But now days SEO experts are more focus on local market of geo locations. Due to more compact competition in universal/international search, webmasters are working hard to improve their search engine ranking around specific geographical location for better business. But the question is that, how to get listed in local search result? To get the answer of this question one has to focus on following SEO factors after you submit your website in SE’s local business center and yellow pages (most recommended).

SEO Factors:

(1) Domain Extension:

  • Using a Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) such as .au, .de, .fr, .es, .se, .uk, .cn, etc.
  • Alternatively use sub domains for each language, such as fr.domain.com, au.domain.com etc.
  • But if you already have a website with .com TLD that you can use sub-directories such as domain.com/fr, domain.com/de.

(2) Hosting of Site:
Having your website hosted in target country is very important factor.

(3) Avoid Mix Languages:
Website should not have mixing of two languages. It preferred to create directory/sub domain/subfolders, if you want to have more language in website

(4) Language Indication code:
Add content language meta tag in page header. It hints search engine about the language and targeted market of website.
Example: For Italian the meta tag should be <meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="it" />

(5) Local Address:
Add local business address and phone number in website template or on contract us page.

(6) Obtain Backlinks from ccTLD website and local Directories:
Get backlinks from website which has same domain extension, yellow pages & local business directories.

(7) Title and Description:
Try to mention exact location and country name in title and description of website.

(8) Country or Language Specific Accounts in Webmaster Tools:
If you’ve country specific ccTLD then Google Webmaster Tool will automatically select targeted geographic location but if you’ve .com or other general domain extension then you can select specific geographical location as your targeted location.

(9) Backlinks with geo-targeted keywords:
Get as much as possible backlinks with geo targeted keywords in anchor text

(10) Reviews on Local Listing:
Encourage your clients to put their reviews on your local listing.
