A Beginners Guide To Flutter App Development

527 View

As the use of mobile apps is increasing day by day, various platforms have been introduced to develop different types of applications in the market. Gone are the days when mobile apps were created as native apps. Mobile applications can now be developed with hybrid platforms to facilitate the process and result in cost-effective development. Different hybrid technologies have been introduced, i.e. Ionic, React, Phonegap, Flutter etc.

Among all of those, in the current era, Flutter is on top of it to develop mobile applications. You can hire Flutter developers for your next mobile app development project.

Introduction of Flutter

Flutter was created and released in May 2017 by Google as a free open-source mobile UI framework. Flutter is a Google created and released free open-source mobile UI framework.

Flutter SDK is a collection of various development tools to build mobile applications. It provides the platform that converts the code into native code to support various mobile platforms like iOS & Android. Flutter framework consists of reusable UI elements, which are called WIDGETS. Our Flutter developers can personalize those widgets as per your requirements.

Flutter development is very useful to create native mobile applications and web applications in the single code base. Using the same code, the application can be deployed on the app store, play store and the same code can be used for PWA also. The most important advantage of Flutter is that a single developer can work on the code and it will be supported for all the platforms.

Why Is It Better Rather Than Other Hybrid Platforms?

  • The applications that are built with flutter, having the same look and feel in terms of UI just like native apps. While the applications which are built with other hybrid platforms like React / Ionic are giving the feel of web pages on the mobile screens.
  • By using Flutter, you can easily access the native controls like Bluetooth, WIFI and any background service that you can only access with the native apps.
  • As Flutter is the technology introduced by Google, we will get the new updates when it comes to native Android app development.
  • Hot reload is the most beneficial feature of Flutter using which developers can instantly view the changes applied to the code on emulators, simulators, and hardware without wasting time to re-run / rebuild the whole app again.

As you can see there are lots of benefits of using Flutter, you are exactly on the right track by choosing Flutter for mobile application development.

To become a Flutter developer & create mobile applications using Flutter, you should know about the below components:

  • Install Flutter
  • Flutter Basics
  • DART Basics
  • Widgets
  • Customized Widgets
  • Layouts & Navigation to design the app
  • API Calls & JSON Parsing

Let’s begin to get the knowledge step by step to create basic Flutter applications.

How To Set Up Flutter?

There are multiple ways to install Flutter on your system. It also depends on the OS that you are using on your machine.

You can install flutter according to your machine’s OS from the below link:

https://flutter.dev/docs/get-started/install

If you face any troubles or issues while installing, then you can just add the comment below / contact us. Our Flutter developers will help you to solve them.

Once you are done with installation, you will also get the DART package installed. While installing Flutter, it will choose the appropriate version of DART automatically; so no need to install it separately.

IDE

To develop Flutter applications, below IDEs are available:

  • Visual Studio

This IDE was announced as very efficient & easy to use for flutter development. Most web developers prefer this editor as they are very familiar with it. Visual Studio Code comes equipped with a huge plugin system and functionalities. Flutter plugin should be installed if you are going to use VS.

  • Android Studio

It is one of the best IDEs to create mobile applications as well as Flutter applications. If you are a mobile application developer, then you should prefer this editor. It is one of Google’s best user interface frameworks to all developers. You can now quickly create mobile, desktop or web users with native apps.

  • IntelliJ Idea Community / IntelliJ Idea Ultimate

Rarely this IDE is used for the development of flutter applications. But if you are familiar with it, then you can start Flutter development using it.

Please check the below link for more information to set up an editor:

https://flutter.dev/docs/get-started/editor

After setting up Flutter & IDE, your machine is ready to start coding for making flutter apps. Now the next step is to learn the programming language DART. If you are new to mobile application development, then you need to install Xcode also.

DART

The early Flutter team assessed more than a dozen languages and chose Dart because it corresponded to the way the user interface was constructed.

Dart is a major reason developers like Flutter. Dart is completely open source with a clean license.Dart was released by Google in 2011 and was initially designed as a replacement for JavaScript.

To start programming with DART, please refer below official article:

https://dart.dev/guides/language/language-tour

We are also going to publish an article on DART programming concepts soon.

Create the first project of Flutter

  1. Open the IDE and select Create New Flutter Project.
  2. Select Flutter Application as the project type. Then click Next.
  3. Verify the Flutter SDK path specifies the SDK’s location (select Install SDK… if the text field is blank).
  4. Enter a project name (for example, myapp). Then click Next.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. Wait for Android Studio to install the SDK and create the project.

To create a project with different IDEs, please refer to below link:

https://flutter.dev/docs/get-started/test-drive

Do the Coding

  • Open main.dart file from the lib folder. And replace the code with below:

import ‘package:flutter/material.dart’;

void main() => runApp(MyApp());

class MyApp extends StatelessWidget {

  @override

Widget build(BuildContext context) {

return MaterialApp(

      title: ‘Welcome to Flutter’,

      home: Scaffold(

        appBar: AppBar(

          title: Text(‘Welcome to Flutter’),

        ),

        body: Center(

          child: Text(‘Hello World’),

        ),

      ),

    );

  }

}

Run the code:

As shown in the above image, from the Android Studio toolbar, click on the Target selector & select simulator / emulator. If none are listed as available, select Tools> Android > AVD Manager and create one there. For details, see Managing AVDs.

  • After selecting the Target selector, click on the “Run” button, that’s it.

Here you are done with the very basic first application of the Flutter.

Wrapping Up !!

Voliaa !! You have created the first application with Flutter. As described above, Flutter has taken the mobile app market now and why it is that is already discussed above. By knowing the major advantages of Flutter, you are definitely going on the right path for developing mobile applications & making your position in Mobile Application Development technology. Obviously this is just the starting but still you should know about lots of components of flutter i.e Widgets, handling navigation, json parsing etc.

If you are facing any troubles, then we are here to help you. At ZealousWeb Technologies, experienced Flutter developers are there to solve your problems by providing an efficient solution.

We are going to publish a new article with new useful concepts of Flutter to create a whole application. Stay Tuned !!

FAQ

Is Xcode required to develop Flutter applications?

Xcode is not needed for the development of Flutter applications. You can also check the app in iOS simulators but you can not deploy the application on the app store without Xcode.

Which technology knowledge is mandatory to learn Flutter development?

It is easy to learn if you are a native mobile app developer – iOS developer or an Android developer. But if you are not, then only C, C++ or OOPS concepts are fine also.
